Happy Catholic School's Week Parents!!!! We have been having a great week! We've been very busy with our classes, but also our fun days!

Religion- They took their test on Monday. They did GREAT! We started our new chapter on Wednesday. They will also be getting their mass parts this Friday. Our 5th grade mass will be next Wednesday, Feb. 4. I think we only do one more together. I think. Where is the time going????

Math- They took their math tests on Wednesday. I will be sending those home to get signed either today or tomorrow. It depends on how long the talent show lasts. They will do some math on Friday, but we won't really get started until next Monday. They will have a chapter over dividing decimals with whole numbers and decimals. I asked them how they felt after this chapter test. They were a mixed bag. Most of them said it wasn't too hard, but it wasn't easy either. I think the story problems are forcing them to stop and think about it. Sometimes I think they may have been overthinking.

Reading- This week's story was about a girl who made friends with the neighbor boy. He was making a time machine in his garage that could transport them to the future, but for just a little while. She wanted to be sent to the future to see who won the writing contest their school was putting on because she really wanted to win. There was a cute twist at the end that made them say, "What???" "Oh man!"  I love it when that happens. In our center time we read a similar story about a girl who received a watch for her birthday. It could turn her invisible. Through our reading of the story and the discussion, we came to the conclusion that being invisible wasn't always the best thing.  They will take a test on Friday over this story. Our reading will be the same.  Last week's scores are in their take home folders. They did really well last week!  In grammar last week we worked on adjectives. This week we are working on identifying adverbs. I always think this is more of a challenge because you have to figure out how they are describing a verb.

Friday is dress up day for our mass at church. Please let me know if your child doesn't have anyone to sit with at mass. They will sit with me! They can be taken from the church after mass is over or after you have some cookies and punch. Please let me know. I believe the bus will stop by and pick those kids up that still need to take the bus home. I will ask your kids their plans on Friday morning. If your child has a part in the mass--there will be reserved seating up front for them and their guest or grandparent.

STM Foundation Auction and Dinner-- It is that time of year again! I have a couple of parents who have volunteered to take charge of the live and silent auction items this year! Thank you!!! Anyway, I am going to collect the money that you are willing to donate to those items! I believe the live auction item will be a piece of furniture again. Please remember to donate if you are able to help us. I am not asking for a certain amount. We will accept any and all donations! I would like to get the money to the helpers by February 20. I will keep posting this weekly to remind you. Thanks again for all your help!!!

I hope everyone has been able to enjoy the nice weather. It looks like we will be facing the reality of winter again! I see snow is in the forecast for the weekend! Have a great weekend!  God Bless, Miss Surma

Happy Thursday! I hope you are having a great week! Below is a reminder for next week! I always look forward to this week!

Catholic Schools Week Plans- We will have our dress up days. IF your child doesn't want to participate, they don't have to, but they will have to follow the normal dress code.

Sunday- Mass at church 9AM,
Monday- HAT DAY!!! Students should also bring a sack lunch. NO DRINKS! Milk will be provided.

Tuesday-COME AS YOU ARE DAY! They can wear their PJs or sweats, a robe, and slippers! I would suggest that if it is cold, they will want their snow pants for recess that day!

Wednesday- CLASS THEME DAY! The 5th graders voted today to do opposite day. Boys will dress as girls and the girls will dress as boys. If your child isn't comfortable doing it, they don't have to participate. I told them to be creative and gutsy! Go all out! I have had 5th graders do this before! It was so fun to see them!

Thursday- Talent Show at 9:30 AM in gym. Students are signing up now to try out! BLUE and GOLD DAY!!!!

Friday- DRESS UP DAY!!! Grandparents/ Special Guest Mass at 1:30 at Holy Spirit Church. Cookies and punch will be served in the basement following mass. If you or the guest are taking the child home that day, please let me know either before that day or find me in the basement and let me know.

Reading- In your child's folder are their scores from last week's unit test. This was a Benchmark test. I think those are a little more challenging. I did go back through the test myself when I saw questions being missed. I found that if they looked back, most times the answer was within the story. I talked to them about some of the questions and said they are giving you hints in the question. Now, I realize some of the questions are inferencing, so they have to be able to put their previous knowledge about the topic or key words with the information in the story to come up with the answer. That can be difficult. This test also had more stories and questions for them to read. If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

They have all chosen their book report books as well. I think they are enjoying the books they have chosen.

Math- They are finishing up their chapter this week! They will be taking a test early next week, but I haven't finalized a day because of CSW schedule. Their next chapter will be on dividing decimals. They are doing really well with multiplying them. The biggest hurdle is where to put the decimal when you are multiplying a decimal and whole number or when you multiply two decimals.

Religion- We are finishing up our chapter on Baptism and Confirmation. They will have a test over this on Monday.

SOS- This semester I have Jessica Drey as my SOS student! We are excited to have her around! Last semester we had Andy Gordon! We're just keeping it in the family!! It's great to see my past students again!

Don't forget their is a kick off mass on Sunday at church! Even if you child isn't participating in mass, please join us! I believe the PTO is providing breakfast in the basement afterwards!

Have a great weekend! God Bless, Miss Surma

Hello Parents! WOW! It feels like forever since I have talked to you! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! I had a great time at home. Mom did great last week getting her teeth removed. I wasn't planning on the extra day, but after that wind started blowing at 50mph,  I was glad I didn't come back. There is a lot more snow up there!

Catholic Schools Week Plans- We will have our dress up days. IF your child doesn't want to participate, they don't have to, but they will have to follow the normal dress code.

Reading- They are taking their unit 3 test this week. On Friday, I will be assigning the next book report. Mrs. Rughair has already talked to them about the books. I am requiring they choose either a Newbery winner or a Newbery Honor book. I do this on purpose. These books have been given this award for their story, but sometimes the kids pass these up because the story doesn't sound interesting or the book jacket is old looking. Inside those book jackets are a lot of great stories. I told them that this Friday I can help them choose a book when we go to the computer lab. I have learned some of their interests so I can possibly head them in the right direction.

Math- We are working on multiplying decimals now. This book again teaches them differently. I have taught them to draw Base 10 blocks to show their multiplication of small numbers and decimals. At first I thought, "Wow, why do this? " But as I sat down with it and did the work myself, I realized it was a great way of showing that regrouping that is happening when we multiply. We usually don't think about it, we just do it. This gives them a better picture. They are doing regular multiplication too with decimals. They are going to learn the way you did, but we are taking things slower.

Aide- We have hired a new aide to replace Miss Miller. We have Miss Ogburn joining us now. She is from Corning and graduated from Pella in December with a degree in history. She will begin working with our centers next week after the testing is done. Right now, she is helping me out with checking papers, etc.

I hope you have a great weekend! I am heading to Doon again. This Saturday is Mom's 80th birthday! Five or her 6 kids will be home to take her out to dinner along with their kids! It will be a full house. Enjoy the warmer temps!
God Bless, Miss Surma
