Happy Catholic Schools Week! We are having a great week! We have been busy every day! It's too bad the illnesses that are going around right now. It always seems to hit during CSW.

Skating- Tomorrow we will leave by 8:30. The kids will need a sack lunch and drink. I told them that if they are bringing pop to make sure it was in a bottle with a screw top cap and not a can. That way if they don't drink it all, it can go back home with them. Parents are welcome to join us up there. If you are going to take your child home, make sure to let me know. You are to only take your child home, not other students. Make sure they have socks on and not footies. They will want that coverage. They are also to wear blue and gold or their STM gear. I told them not to wear sweats.  If your child is ill, please keep them home. It's a lot easier than having to call you from Des Moines. I know no one wants to miss out, but I also don't want them feeling miserable.

Mass- Friday's mass will begin at 1:30. We will head to the church on buses around 1:00. They will have their bags with them. Their will be a reception in the basement afterwards. If your child is leaving with their guest, make sure they let me know. We will still have the buses and trolley for those who won't be going home with their adult guest.

Reading- We didn't cover a story this week. I didn't want to cram it into 3 days. They finished typing up their Harris Burdick stories and they have been sharing those aloud. They are really great! I think I will send those home next week in their folders.  Next week we will do a story with spelling.

BOOK REPORT- The countdown is on! These are due on Feb. 15. I see some are not done reading yet, so they need to make sure they are finding time to do that so they aren't creating their project on the 14th.

Valentine's Day- We are moving the school parties to the 13th since the 14th is Ash Wednesday and we begin our Lenten promises that day.  If I could get a parent or two to volunteer to bring in a small treat and/or drink on the 13th, that would be great!  Just let m know. First come, first serve.

Ash Wednesday is the 5th graders mass. It is usually a bigger mass because we get more people from the parish joining us. Please join us if you can make it!

Math- They are working on multiplying decimals and whole numbers this week.

Social Studies- they were given a study guide on Wednesday. It will be due on Monday.

Have a great weekend!
God Bless,
Miss Surma

Hello Parents, I hope this finds you well. I know all kinds of flu is going around! We may just be fist bumping for awhile instead of shaking hands in the morning. :)

Lots of information in this letter. Hold on!

Skating permission forms- I haven't received everyone's form yet. Remember those are due next week. The trip will be on Thursday. Some may have returned the form, but still need to pay the $10.

Sack Lunches- They will need one on Monday (milk provided). They will also need one on Thursday. They will need to supply their own drink.

There is another permission form and note in your child's folder today. That needs to be returned no later than Tuesday. Thank you! I know you're getting swamped!

They will also have one for Friday. We need to get them to church for the Grandparent/Special Guest Mass. If your child doesn't have a guest coming, let me know. Sometimes we get volunteers from the church who like to join us! If your child is leaving from church with their grandparent or special guest, make sure they let me know. Thanks!

Reading- This week they read a story called Lunch Money. It is about a boy who makes his own comic books. He does EVERYTHING in creating them. He sells them for $0.25. In grammar we are identifying adjectives. They are answering the questions: how many? what kind? and origin?

Their 2nd book report will be due on February 15. That gives them about 2.5 weeks to get it done. I think some need to push their reading.

Math- We are beginning to multiply decimals and whole numbers. They are also working with exponents. On Wednesday, we started doing it by drawing pictures of  base ten blocks to show the multiplication. They had fun! We will begin the regular way on Thursday.

Religion- We are focusing on baptism and confirmation, but mostly about how kids and adults can receive these sacraments during the Easter Vigil. We are also talking about how during Confirmation, they pick a saint name. On Wednesday, they began to research saints and then pick one they like. They are taking notes on their life. Once the research is done they will type up a paragraph to share with the class. I always like hearing who they pick and why? It is so different from when I made mine back in 6th grade .

CSW- On Monday they can wear sweats or pjs! If they choose pjs, I'm okay with slippers, housecoat, etc!

CSW MASSES- some of your kids have parts in either the Sunday or Friday mass. Those are in their folders!

Have a great weekend! Stay well! Hope to see you at our kick off mass on Sunday!
God Bless,
Miss Surma

Dear Parents,
Welcome back! This weather has really messed with our schedules! Hopefully it will get all worked out soon!

Reading- On Tuesday they took their test for last week's story. On Wednesday- Friday, they will be taking their unit test. I would like to say that next week we will start a new unit and a new story, but I feel like I can't really tell you that with the weather we are having! I will keep you updated!

Math- They didn't take their test on Tuesday due to the late start, so I moved that to Wednesday. We will see where we get with this as well.

Religion- They did take that test on Tuesday!!!

Mass Sign-Up- I sent home a letter last week to sign your child up for our kick-off mass at church on January 28. It was due back on Wednesday. If you still want to turn it in, please do. We will be sending home parts next week. Make sure you have checked your schedules. Thanks so much for the help! We love this busy and crazy week!

Field Trip- There will be a permission form in your child's folder this week. We are taking the kids roller skating during CSW. Parents are welcome to join us, but you will have to drive up separately. Your child has to ride up on the bus with us, but if you want to take them home afterwards you may do so.

Auction- There is also a letter for our basket for the auction. This year we are doing a basket per wing. So this will be from the 3-5 graders. The theme is Gardening. Please read it over and if you can help out, we appreciate that.  Danielle Steele told me would take care of the silent auction item.

Spirit Day is Friday! $1 for sweats! We are also going to work at the Food Pantry.

Coin Wars- Next Monday will begin the Coin Wars put on by the high school. The class with the most money raised gets a pizza party. 2nd place gets a cookie party. The money will help Veterans take their Honor Flight to Washington, DC. We will collect money through Friday.

I hope you have a good weekend! Maybe I will see some of you at our Trivia Night on Saturday! God Bless,
Miss Surma

Hello Parents,
First, the sickness season is upon us. I have a little of both in my rooms. We have the vomiting and we have the sore throats and fevers. Remember if your child has a fever they have to be 24 hours fever free before returning to school. We are wiping down desks and we are going to halt shaking hands in the morning just to eliminate the extra touching and passing of germs.

Reading- This week we read our final story in this unit. It was the true story about 2 different teenagers and their roles in the Revolutionary War. Joseph Martin fought as a teenager in the war. He was paid a silver dollar to join the Continental Army. He signed up for 6 months. He also gave a bit of a description of the battlefield.  Sybil Ludington was like Paul Revere. She rode all night on horseback to summon soldiers to meet at her dad's farm so they could go off to the battle. Next week we will have the Unit 3 test. We don't have school on Monday, so this will begin on Tuesday.

Religion- This week we are finishing up our chapter. We also talked about two saints and how they dedicated their lives towards God. One was Maximilian Kolbe. He was a Polish priest that was sent to a concentration camp during WWII. He also volunteered his life so that another prisoner could live. He was killed there. I showed them a little video on his life as well. They had a lot of questions about that time. We did end up talking about it at length due to my dad coming from Poland at the end of WWII. They will be testing over this chapter on Friday.

Math- we finished our decimal chapter on adding and subtracting this week. They will also have a test over this on Friday. Friday is a heavy test day. Next week we will begin multiplication and division of decimals.

Monday, January 15- no school for our students. We (the staff) will be heading to Des Moines for professional development.

Friday, January 19 we will go to the Food Pantry to work.

Catholic Schools Week- In folders this week will be a sign up to help at our kickoff mass for CSW. The mass will be at Holy Spirit Church on January 28. Please look over your schedules to see if your kids can help us out. The PTO will provide a breakfast in the basement following mass.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! I hope you stay well!!! I hope you stay warm since it looks like our temps are going to fall again!  See your kids on Tuesday!

God Bless,
Miss Surma

Hello Parents,
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great time over the Christmas break. I really enjoyed my time in Pennsylvania! We did go into Pittsburgh for a day, but most of the time was spent at home. It was very relaxing!

Reading- I assigned them their next book report on Wednesday. They are reading Newbery Honor or Newbery Winner books. Mrs. Weight and I went through them in our school library. Everyone has chosen one. I told them they have until next Wednesday, Jan. 10 to change it if they need to. If you hear them tell you they are bored or don't understand it...let me know so we can change it now! Their project will be due on Thursday, February 15.  It gives them about 6 weeks.

On Thursday, they will start their next writing project. Next Monday we will start our last story in this unit. That will mean the week of Jan. 15 will be a unit test week.

Math- This week they are working on adding and subtracting decimals.

Religion- We are talking about baptism. Today we read the story of John the Baptist when he baptizes Jesus.

Spirit Day- This Friday they can wear sweats for $1!

Trivia Night  is set for January 20. We'd love to see you there!

There is not much to this letter. I hope everyone is staying warm!

God Bless,
Miss Surma
